Extension Courses
Procedures & Charges
Choosing An Extension Course Teacher
- To be an Extension Course Teacher, either in the local church, Bible school, or Internship Program, the most important qualification is to have a proven teaching gift and ministry in the local church. The Pastor's Recommendation is the most important step in choosing the teacher.
- The teacher must then be thoroughly familiar with the contents of the Extension Course. The best way to accomplish this is to have already completed the course through Portland Bible College or CLTI.
- If the person applying to be an Extension Course Teacher has not already completed the course either through PBC or CLTI, it will be necessary for him/her to complete it as they go. Completed Worksheets, Exams and Study Projects will be mailed into and graded by the CLTI office. In this way, the teacher will not only be able to review the material before teaching it, he will also be able to see how we grade the material. At the end of the course the Extension Teacher will also receive a Certificate of Completion.
- A Teacher's Application may now be submitted online.
Forming An Extension Course
- Any Church Leadership Training Institute course currently available is automatically available for use as an extension course. The Pastor and the designated teacher can study the CLTI Description Of Courses and decide which course to offer. Contact should then be made with the CLTI office so the Extension Course Registration Packet can be sent.

- The designated teacher must then apply to the Church Leadership Training Institute to qualify as an extension course teacher. The Extension Course Teacher Application will be provided along with the Pastor's recommendation. THIS FIRST STEP CAN NOW BE COMPLETED ONLINE.
- If the teacher's application is approved, a letter of acceptance along with an Extension Course Registration form will be sent to him/her. This Course Registration form is also available online.
- When registering for the course, estimate the number of students that will be taking the course for credit. An appropriate number of student registration forms will also be sent.
- A successful Extension Course needs to have a minimum number of students. Be sure to communicate to them that they will be taking a college-level course and will receive transferable college credit for it. We recommend that at least six students show a clear interest in taking a particular course before you register for it with CLTI. Conducting a Study Group will be most effective for a smaller number of students.
- When the Course Fee and the Student Fee Downpayment have been sent to the CLTI office, all course materials will be sent to the extension course teacher for class preparation.
- When the Student Registration forms, Enrollment Fees (for those taking a course for the first time) and Student Fees have been sent in at the end of the course, a permanent academic record will be established for each student and a Certificate of Completion sent to them.
- When repeating an Extension Course it will be necessary to register it again with the CLTI office.
Extension Course Materials Provided By CLTI
- Administrative Forms:
- Course Records for each student
- Grade Records for the teacher
- A complete Learning Packet will be provided for each course. This packet includes:
- An introduction to the course and Course Syllabus.
- Audio cassettes of each lesson recorded live in the Portland Bible College classroom.
- A complete set of interactive notes corresponding to the recorded lectures.
- Worksheets for each lesson.
- A Study Project(s) for the course.
- A complete Score Key will also be provided the extension course teacher, including:
- A Score Key Introduction designed specifically for the extension course teacher.
- All the class notes with the blanks filled in (for courses with fill-in blanks).
- All Worksheets and Study Projects with the answers included.
- Required textbooks must be ordered separately and can be purchased from CLTI or directly from City Bible Publishing.
Conducting An Extension Course
- The extension course teacher is responsible to coordinate the registration of students in the course.
- The teacher is also responsible to present the material for each lesson. This may involve a number of factors:
- Playing part or all of the audio tape of the lecture recorded live at Portland Bible College.
- Supplementing the audio tape with clarifying material developed by the teacher.
- Lecturing on all the material in the lesson, using the audio tape only for class preparation.
- Answering any questions students might have.
- Using the CLTI Score Key, the extension teacher is also responsible to grade all the worksheets, study projects and exams involved in the extension course.
- The extension course teacher will be the contact person with the CLTI office.
- If the extension course is being offered in an established local church school, this school's Registrar's Office will also be responsible for permenant academic record keeping.
Use Of Extension Course Materials
- Any printed course notes may be freely reproduced and handed out in class.
- Charts, maps, etc., may be reproduced and/or used to make overhead transparencies to be used in class.
- The Worksheets must be reproduced and given to the students.
- The Study Project(s) must also be given to the students.
- The audio cassettes can be used by the extension course teacher for class preparation. Portions or all of the tapes may be played in class. Cassette tapes may not be reproduced for any reason, and they may not be loaned to anyone who has not registered for the course.
- Course Fee. The local church school will be charged an overall course fee. The Course Fee will be due at the beginning of the course. This fee pays for:
- All materials, including the Learning Packet and Score Key.
- All administrative forms.
- All the administrative costs of setting up the course and coordination with the extension course teacher.
- Teacher Course Fee. If the Extension Course Teacher has not already completed the course either through PBC or CLTI and is completing it as the course it being conducted, the CLTI office is grading the teacher's materials, mailing them back to the teacher, etc., a small Teacher Course Fee of $30.00 per credit will be charged.
- Enrollment Fee. An initial Enrollment Fee will be charged per student. This is a one-time fee that covers the cost of establishing a complete academic record for the student. The Enrollment Fee is $10.00 and is due CLTI in its entirety at the end of the course. (We recommend that you charge an Enrollment Fee of $20.00, payable to you at the beginning of the course.)
- Student Fee. Each individual student will also be charged a fee per course. The full Student Fee will be due at the end of the course. This fee pays for:
- Maintaining all course records for each course the student completes.
- Maintaining the permanent academic records for each student, updating them after each course.
- Providing each student with a Certificate of Completion.
- Student Fee Downpayment. Before a course is established it will be necessary to pay 50% of the Enrollment Fees and Student Fees of the estimated number of students taking the course for credit.
- Repeat Courses. When a registered Extension Course is repeated, the Course Fee will not be charged again. However, the course will need to be registered again and the Student Fee Downpayment made.
- Fee Structure. These fees will be charged based on the number of credits in the extension course being offered. (See the following chart.)
Credits Course Fee Student Fee One $175 $17.50 Two $350 $35.00 Three $525 $52.50
- Tuition Fee. It is recommended that the local church school charge each student a tuition fee to cover the church's expenses. This fee should contain within it the CLTI Student Fee. We recommend the local church school charge a minimum tuition of $50.00 per credit (or any amount they might consider reasonable) and of that pay only $17.50 per credit to CLTI. Note: If a student does not wish to receive college credit for the Extension Course, we recommend you charge them an Audit Fee of no less than 2/3 your normal rate of tuition. Since CLTI will not maintain records for those not completing a course for credit, no part of an Audit Fee will be due us.
- Replacement Fees. CLTI will provide replacement cassette tapes for $5.00 per tape and $10.00 per mp3 CD. Printed material may also be replaced for an appropriate amount.
- Textbooks. All textbooks can be provided by CLTI. The cost of textbooks should simply be passed on to the students. You may also check into establishing an account with City Christian Publishing and getting your textbooks directly from them.
Completing An Extension Course
- For credit to be received for completion of an Extension Course, the CLTI office must review a copy of all graded Worksheets, Study Projects and Exams. These will be mailed in by the extension course teacher at the end of the course. (These copies will not be mailed back so the originals should be kept by the teacher.)
- The extension course teacher must also send a copy of his Grade Record for the course, to be kept as a part of the CLTI permanent academic record. From the Grade Record the scores of all the students will be recorded in their academic record. (Remember: Church schools will also need to maintain their own permanent records.)
- Those who successfully complete a course will receive college credit for it and the credit put on their college transcript with CLTI, who will provide Certificates of Completion for each student. These Certificates will be signed by the CLTI Administrator with a line left for the extension course teacher to sign.
