The Definition And Purpose Of Doctrine(Audio Clip) I. THE DEFINITION OF DOCTRINE AND THEOLOGY
A. "DOCTRINE
1. To teach the substance; something taught, teaching, instruction.
2. The principles of religion that are taught.
3. Doctrine refers to truths and principles that are meant to be taught.B. "THEOLOGY"
1. "Theos" means GOD.
2. "Logos" means WORD, discourse, the study of something.
3. Theology is the study of God and of religious doctrines.
To get to know God is the goal of the Christian. The study of theology should be the pursuit of anyone who wants to get to know God. II. THE PURPOSE OF DOCTRINE AND THEOLOGY
"To set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us" (Luke 1:1).
1. "To set forth," to draw up a narrative.
2. "In order," consecutively.
3. "A declaration," a leading and following through; a full declaration.
4. "Those things which are most surely believed among us."Three Benefits of Doctrine and Theology:
1. You will be more CONVINCED when you see the logical connection between various doctrines. "That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed" (Luke 1:4).
2. You will be able to REMEMBER it and understand it better when you've learned doctrine in a logical sequence. Truth and knowledge is an integrated whole.
3. You will be able to CONVINCE others better when you understand the logical sequence of doctrine.
