Lesson 1. Whe Study The Covenants?

The Covenants are going to provide a framework on which we can begin to hang key words, ideas and themes. As we go through the Bible, instead of looking at isolated, unrelated theological themes, we're going to find that these things are not unrelated. They are all part of a networking of one common thread which is this - God's relationship with man.

I. WHY DO WE STUDY THE COVENANTS?

A. Covenants are the FRAMEWORK for understanding God's dealings with men.

1. Why did God do the things he did in human history?
2. What is sin?
3. What is redemption?
4. Why does God judge people?
5. Why did Jesus become a man?
6. What is God's purpose for man?
7. What determines God's attitude toward nations?

B. The Covenants are the basis to understanding the Bible.

1. The Bible is divided into TWO sections, testaments, or covenants.
2. Basic principles of inspiration, revelation, and structure can be understood by placing them in a covenantal framework.

C. There is an attack on Covenant truth in society today.

1. Covenantal agreements between people such as business agreements and contracts are in transition.
2. A sense of COMMITTMENT or obligation has been lost.
3. Lack of responsibility and covenant in marriage.
4. Raising a generation who will be more irresponsible.

D. Our lives are determined by covenants and our RESPONSE to them.

1. Violating the terms of the covenant brings a CURSE.
2. Keeping the words of the covenant will bring blessing.
3. The world watches God's covenantal people and how they LIVE OUT their lives.
