Great preaching does not build great churches. What builds great church is shared vision. III. A Great Challenge For 21st Century Leadership

CULTIVATING A VISION FOR YOUR LIFE
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision (1 Samuel 3:1 KJV).
I have also spoken by the prophets, and have multiplied visions; I have given symbols through the witness of the prophets (Hosea 12:10 NKJ).
And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions (Joel 2:28 NKJ; see also Acts 2:17).
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us" (Acts 16:9 NKJ; see also 9:10-12).
Now the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a vision, "Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent (Acts 18:9 NKJ).
Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision (Acts 26:19 NKJ).
I. Taking A Self-Inventory
A. HONEST Evaluation--Hard Questions
1. Where am I?
2. Where am I going?
3. What are my strengths and weaknesses?
4. What are my dreams?
5. What are my realistic goals?
6. What is it you feel God has for your life?
7. What specifically would your function be in the Body of Christ?
8. What are some of your inner dreams and hopes? How can these hidden ambitions become realities?
PERSONAL VISION Having a personal vision means discerning God's will for our lives and ministry. This vision is based upon present and past experiences plus understanding of what God desires to do in the future.
B. Your PERSONAL vision is very important to your corporate vision. Your vision must correspond to the churches vision. Your vision must be fulfilled in the context of the corporate vision. You are responsible to know the will of God for your life, to live it out, to be disciplined, and to achieve it.
VISION Every church must have a vision--clear, distinct, Focused--calling the church to be and to do. yet, corporate vision is tied to the personal vision of the catalytic leader at the helm.
C. When you develop a personal vision three things happen:
1. A sense of DIRECTION to life.
2. A sense of discipline to life.
3. A sense of DYNAMIC to life.D. Potential Personal Obstacles
1. I don't have what it takes.
2. I don't have the motivation.
3. I don't have the training.
4. I don't have the self-discipline.
5. I don't want the responsibility.
6. I lack the energy.
7. I'm not a self-starter.
8. I'm too old/young.
9. I don't have the time.
10. I don't have the money.
If you can fulfill the vision with your own strength and talent, it's not from God. E. If you don't make a VISION for yourself, through God's help, someone else will make it for you. If you don't live out the vision God wants you to have, you'll live out someone else's vision.
"Give us a clear vision that we may know where to stand and what to stand for, because unless we stand for something, we shall fall for anything, and fall we will" (Peter Marshall).
